We went public about The Shadowserver Foundation’s urgent 2020 funding situation on March 16th. We then published our first progress update on April 2nd, highlighting some of the great initial support we received for continuing our public benefit services. On April 9th, we announced that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the deadline for our data center migration had been extended by Cisco. This changed the shutdown date from May 26th to August 31st. On May 17th we were very pleased to announce that contracts had been signed for new data center space and the migration can soon begin.
During the past two months, other new major donors have continued to make significant contributions to our cause. We would like to publicly acknowledge their generosity and highlight some of the additional support that is being provided in order to help sustain Shadowserver’s ongoing operations.
Additional Generous Financial Support from Trend Micro
Trend Micro has very generously committed $600,000 to support Shadowserver’s public benefit services ($200,000 per year for three years). Thank you very much Trend!
Leading cybersecurity company Trend Micro has successfully followed its mission to help make the world a safe place in which to exchange digital information – fostering a culture built by people who live and breathe threat intelligence. Trend Micro often collaborates with law enforcement agencies around the world, providing these agencies with the ability to stop global threats and to take down attackers. These endeavors have previously included joint activities with The Shadowserver Foundation, such as identifying and remediating backdoored Netis routers or disrupting Magecart online credit card skimming.
Trend Micro has been a long term partner of Shadowserver, participating in our malware exchange program. The program enables vetted security vendors and researchers to automatically exchange large reciprocal volumes of new malware samples to improve anti-virus detections. This helps to improve their products and to better protect their customers and our global constituents from cyber crime.
Trend Micro said “Trend Micro is very happy to have partnered on investigations with The Shadowserver Foundation in the past, and will continue to in the future, in our shared goal to make the world safe for the exchange of digital information.”
Once again, we are touched by the speed and level of support being offered by generous donors – particularly in these unprecedented times. We really appreciate Trend Micro helping to ensure that Shadowserver can survive and continue its public benefit mission.
Even if you or your organization can’t currently help fund Shadowserver’s urgent 2020 financial needs, please take a moment to thank Trend Micro on Twitter. Your voices, likes and retweets on social media can really help us to take our message out to wider audiences, who may be able to help in both the short and long term.
Making Progress, But Further Financial Support Still Needed
Thank you, everyone, for your fantastic support so far – we are making progress on our 2020 goal and will have more good news to follow again in the coming days. In the meantime, please keep up the great community effort and help us quickly achieve our remaining targets.
If you don’t already receive them, sign up for our public benefit network reports. If you can help support Shadowserver financially, or know someone who can, please reach out on social media and help get the message out, or get in touch by email, urgently.
